Artist profile
Biography
Denia Matías is a visual artist, mathematician, and computer scientist, with a creative career that began in Camagüey, Cuba, in the early 1990s. Since then, her scientific and technological training has coexisted with a strong artistic, experimental, and research vocation.
In her early stage, she developed material works and mixed techniques on wood, using sand, acrylic, leather, carving, pyrography, and incorporated elements, along with sculptural works and small-scale pieces in papier mâché. During those years, she participated in solo and group exhibitions and joint creation projects.
After an extensive professional career linked to computer science, technology, and management, she resumed and expanded her artistic practice. Her contemporary production integrates physical work and a broad body of digital creation, understanding both areas as parts of the same visual investigation.
Matter, technology, memory, emotion, and light come together today in a work characterized by experimentation and the constant search for new expressive languages.
Artist statement
My work arises from curiosity, experimentation, and the need to transform lived experience into image.
Since my earliest works, I have felt the need to construct the image, not just to paint it. Sand mixed with acrylic, leather, carved and burned wood, pyrography, incorporated elements, and papier-mâché were part of my first creative territories.
My mathematical and computer science training and my later experience in the technological world reinforced a way of thinking based on investigating, testing, relating elements, and discovering new possibilities. That is why digital creation naturally entered my work.
Today my practice moves between physical matter and digital space. In material work, I work with surfaces, layers, textures, reliefs, cracks, and gestures; in digital work, I explore other possibilities of composition, figure, abstraction, atmosphere, and light.
I do not consider these languages separate paths. They are different tools within the same search.
I am especially interested in memory and its traces, identity, fragility and resilience, human experience, and transformation. Light appears recurrently in my work as presence, openness, and possibility.
My work may change support, technique, or material. What remains is the need to investigate, construct, and convert emotion and memory into visual language.
